You don’t have to be starving to be an artist. What better way to correct the misconception that there are no profitable careers in the arts than by inviting successful artists to share their experience? The MHS Unified Art Department is presenting its 2014-15 visiting artist series. This speaker series is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Friends of Marblehead Public Schools, Inc.  Four successful and internationally recognized artists will share their work and talk about their life experience to MHS general student body. Each presentation will be followed by a workshop giving students the opportunity to get some feedback on their own work from each guest artist.

First in the series of four, photographer Olivia Parker will present her work on Wednesday December 10^th. On February 4th coming from NYC graphic artist and designer Luba Lukova will talk about her work on social justice and social awareness. Illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the children series The Lunch Lady, will appear March 11^th. The series will conclude with Rebecca Kamen whose work explores the connection between science and art.

Marblehead High School 2014 Senior Art Show

Have you ever wondered what is really behind the gates of the Secret Garden? On May 14^th, you will hold the key to unlock the iron gates. The Virginia A. Carten Gallery at Marblehead Abbot Public Library will be transformed into a magical Secret Garden exhibit, displaying a variety of artwork composed by the senior class of 2014.

Each student has worked countless hours creating these beautiful pieces, and it is time they are revealed for the public to enjoy! The exhibit will include large scale chalk and oil pastel social statements, allegory oil paints, charcoal self portraits, reflection images drawn in pencil, clay busts of the individual artists, photography, graphic design pieces, and much more!

A local up-and-coming singer songwriter, Fia James, will be performing live during the opening reception on Wednesday, May 14^th 5:00–7:00pm.

Enjoy the music, the unique artwork, and the smell of sweet flowers at the Marblehead High School 2014 Senior Art Show.

The Marblehead High School is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Awards are for the compilation of a portfolio and/ or for individual pieces. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, the Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, John Updike, and many more. Each year, teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

Gold Key winners’ work will be on display from March 7 - March 30, 2014 in Boston's City Hall. Regional Gold Key winners will be judged at the national level. All national medalists recognized in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2014 will be notified on Monday, March 17. We would like to congratulate all of the young artists who participated.
