ARTIST SPEAKER SERIES AT MHS

 

In November photographer Olivia Parker shared her work with students.  More recently in February we enjoyed the visit of graphic artist Luba Lukova. And on March 11th renowned cartoonist, author, and illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka visited MHS.

Our last visit will take place in April with Rebecca Kamen on April 29th.These presentations are part of a visiting artist series made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Friends of Marblehead Public Schools, Inc.

 

STORYTELLER JARRETT KROSOCZKA

Jarrett J. Krosoczka has been passionate about storytelling through words and pictures since he was a kid. He began his professional career by illustrating educational readers for a national publisher while still an undergraduate at Rhode Island School of Design. Jarrett is a two-time winner of the Children's Choice Book Award for the Third to Fourth Grade Book of the Year and is the author and/or illustrator of more than twenty-five books for young readers. His work includes several picture books, the Lunch Lady graphic novels and Platypus Police Squad middle-grade novel series. Jarrett has given two TED Talks, both of which have been curated to the main page of TED.com and have collectively accrued more than a million views online. His work has been featured on the front page of The Boston Globe and on NPR's All Things Considered.  His Punk Farm picture book and Lunch Lady series are both currently in development as feature films

GRAPHIC ARTIST LUBA LUKOVA

Internationally recognized, New York based Luba Lukova is regarded as one of the most distinctive image-makers working today. Whether by using an economy of line, color and text to pinpoint essential themes of the human condition or to succinctly visualize social commentary, her art is undeniably powerful and thought provoking. Utilizing engaging composition and energetic contrasts, her distinctive style is powerful in its simplicity and vivid palette.

Lukova's work has been widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. Solo shows include UNESCO, Paris, DDD Gallery, Osaka, La MaMa Gallery, New York, and the Art Institute of Boston. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Denver Art Museum; the Library of Congress; and the World Bank. She is the author of the critically acclaimed Social Justice portfolio, an evocative collection of social commentary art that transcends language, culture, and politics. The collection has been exhibited around the world and has also gone viral on the Internet.

Marblehead High School 2014 Senior Art Show

Have you ever wondered what is really behind the gates of the Secret Garden? On May 14^th, you will hold the key to unlock the iron gates. The Virginia A. Carten Gallery at Marblehead Abbot Public Library will be transformed into a magical Secret Garden exhibit, displaying a variety of artwork composed by the senior class of 2014.

Each student has worked countless hours creating these beautiful pieces, and it is time they are revealed for the public to enjoy! The exhibit will include large scale chalk and oil pastel social statements, allegory oil paints, charcoal self portraits, reflection images drawn in pencil, clay busts of the individual artists, photography, graphic design pieces, and much more!

A local up-and-coming singer songwriter, Fia James, will be performing live during the opening reception on Wednesday, May 14^th 5:00–7:00pm.

Enjoy the music, the unique artwork, and the smell of sweet flowers at the Marblehead High School 2014 Senior Art Show.
